Freddie Hubbard, Trumpet Great, Dies at 70

DECEMBER 30, 2008        TAGS: JAZZ, MUSIC         ADD A COMMENT
Freddie Hubbard’s trumpet playing was described in turn as big, exuberant, pure in tone, flashy and virtuosic. Playing alongside other greats like Art Blakey, John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, Sonny Rollins, Ornette Coleman and Wayne Shorter, Hubbard distinguished himself by his raw, lion-like talent and his slow, but steady, development of a signature sound.

While playing with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and on his own records like Reddy for Freddie (1961) that sound poured forth like a torrent. Here are three performances to remember him by. Hubbard died on Monday, December 29. He was 70.

"Moanin'" with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers

"Fantasy in D" at the Village Vanguard in 1982 with Cedar Walton, Ron Carter and Lenny White

"Straight Life" at the 1975 Down Beat Awards alongside Chick Corea
