Mourning Roundup: Feb. 15, 2010

FEBRUARY 15, 2010        TAGS: SPORTS, MUSIC, HISTORY         ADD A COMMENT
It’s Presidents Day, a day to celebrate the birth of George Washington. Presidents Day was the first federal holiday created to celebrate an American citizen. Enacted in 1880 as a holiday for federal employees in D.C., the third Monday in February became a national holiday in 1885. Great trivia right?

The Knack lead Singer, Doug Fleger, dies at 57

Doug Fleger, the man immortalized by his stammering pronunciation of the word “my”, died on Sunday at the age of 57 after a six-year battle with lung cancer. Fleger was the lead singer of the band The Knack, whose 1979 song “My Sharona”, remains a rhythmically vibrant and widely beloved song.

Inventor of the Frisbee dies.

Fred Morrison, a Utah native who took inspiration from a popcorn tin and created the Frisbee died at the age of 90.

From USA Today:

Morrison traced the idea for the Frisbee to a Thanksgiving Day family picnic in 1937 when he and his future wife tossed the lid of a popcorn tin back and forth for fun, the Deseret News reports.  He took the idea to the beaches of Santa Monica where he sold the "Flying Cake Pan" for 25 cents.

Eventually the toy company Wham-O partnered with Morrison and brought the disc to the world. Generations of tossers later, Ultimate Frisbee might one day become an Olympic sport.  What a journey that popcorn tin made.
