R.I.P Sparks

Unless you are under the age of 30 and prefer your nights of revelry spiked with caffeine, tuarine and ginseng , you might not be familiar with the beverage Sparks. For those of us lucky enough to have reached drinking age at the turn of the 21st century, Sparks was the orange-soda flavored elixir of the party gods, able to brighten up sleepy eyes at any hour of the night.

SparksBut lo, after 6 years as the belle of the hipster ball, Sparks will be discontinued under the threat of legal action by the State of Illinois, which claims that Sparks,

“contain[s] substantially more caffeine than coffee or soda and [is] marketed as a way to ‘power’ your nights by staying awake and drinking more alcohol. This is a completely inappropriate message to send to younger audiences.”

MillerCoors, the brewing company that produces Sparks, will discontinue making it or any alcohol-caffeine drinks and cease all marketing enterprises related to the product.

So long Sparks…
