Scotty Returns

On April 28, the ashes of James Doohan, the actor who played Scotty on the television series Star Trek, were launched into space for a brief, 4-hour visit into the cosmos. On Friday, UP Aerospace, the company that offers this service, recovered the metal cylinder containing Mr. Doohan's ashes in the New Mexico desert.

Scotty was not alone in his journey. The ashes of Gordon Cooper, an actual NASA astronaut, John Meredith Lucas, a writer for the original Star Trek series, and over 200 others were launched together.

Sending part of a loved one's ashes into space for a brief visit is an inventive and, in some cases, appropriate option for alternative-minded mourners. While the journey to space seems the most important, we can't think of a more sublime experience than the graceful fall back to earth. Back to those who loved you, encapsulated in a small steel pod.
