The Descendants: an Ask Judy Letter Hits the Big Screen?

The plot of The Descendants, a George Clooney-led movie set to be released in December, could have been a letter to Obit's resident expert Ask Judy. It might have read something like this.

Dear Judy,

My father doesn't know that my mother's cheating on him. My mother is an ex-model and competitive sailor and has been seeing another sailor on the side. She had a terrible accident at sea and is now in a coma. Her vital signs have deteriorated and my father, who I am not close to, has made the decision to "pull the plug" and cease her life support systems. My father's been  informing our relatives and friends in our town in Hawaii that my mother's last days are ahead of her.

Do i tell my father what i know?

I am a teenager currently living at a drug treatment center in Hawaii. I feel really sorry for my father, and i don't know if my mom's secret (which isn't no secret, the whole island seems to know but him) should die with her. What should I do?

Alex.

The film is based on the 2008 novel Kaui by Hart Hemmings and is directed and adapted by Oscar-winner Alexander Payne, who served as executive producer on the 2007 film The Savages, which similarly dealt with family betrayals near death. Payne also wrote and directed Sideways.
