Waiting for Castro to Die

Cuba waiting for cas

Where is my tricycle?

I’ve been waiting for Fidel Castro to fall since one of his guerrillas tried to seize my beautiful new red trike on Tuesday, Nov. 15, l960. Can you believe that? No, really, every Cuban-American’s been waiting that long.

And ever since, despite constant rumors of his demise -- he turned 82 last year! -- that bearded bastard hasn’t died. Or did he die this morning? Last night? Is he dying as I write this?

To appreciate the meaning of the trike and the fulminations of Cubans in America, you need to know that my family had been all for the Revolution. Fulgencio Batista, Castro’s corrupt predecessor, had captured Cuba in a coup d'état. Castro would be the end of him. The new comandante was a strapping 33-year-old black-and-white newsreel rebel with a black beret, scraggly beard, olive fatigues, and a rifle with a telescopic sight. When he descended from his Sierra Maestra hideout to assume power on New Year’s Day 1959, he was already a legend.

Castro promised a democratic government with elections, the restoration of the Constitution, and freedom from corruption. We believed. Castro wasn’t a mythic white knight on a steed coming to save us. He was the steed itself, El Caballo. The Stallion.

My family and I fled Cuba because within months of the takeover Castro and his men appropriated everything we had worked so hard for: my father’s medical practice, my mother’s social work job, our apartment, its contents, my grandparents’ and uncles’ and aunts’ businesses and homes, and everybody’s bank accounts.

Picture this: My godmother Nisia has just driven my mother and me to the José Martí Airport, 10 miles from what had been my family’s spacious apartment on Calle Ocho in Miramar, La Habana’s elegant northwest suburb. It’s a typically lovely winter day: 75 degrees, refreshing sea breeze, low humidity, bright sun and blue sky, white meringue clouds.

Outside the terminal I’m going up and down on a painted pony whose coin slot Nisia plies with centavos. Nisia picks me up and holds me close. Mami takes our picture. Nisia’s cheek is velvety against mine. She smells like flowers. When I think of Cuban women, they all smell like that, like fragrant gardens, and they all look like movie stars. Sun is forever sparkling off their blood-red fingernails and smiling red lips and golden charm bracelets. Somewhere their handsome, broad-shouldered men are off in their guayaberas, playing dominós and drinking Bacardi rum, puffing masculine clouds of earthy tobacco.

We are Cubanos, living in a place where the simplest beach trip can become a beautiful memory. What never dies — sand, sea, sun, sky — that’s who we are.

Nisia’s in love with Castro. He’s a dictator now, a communist who likes TV so much he’s nationalized it. Political opponents are executed live on the evening news broadcasts. Nisia wants to stay and help Castro fight for his Marxist vision. Nisia and Mami never discuss politics.

We have to leave. Papi’s waiting for us in Miami. We think Castro’s an aberration America will remove soon -- the United States would never allow a communist regime 90 miles from its shores. In Nisia’s Chevy trunk we have packed all we are allowed — two suitcases apiece — and my little red trike, a present from my second birthday party, my last in Cuba. In our back yard I rode it around the aromatic tufts of pink oleander and purple bougainvillea, hibiscus and frangipani.

I kiss Nisia hasta luego, not adios, and pedal furiously to the silver airplane on the tarmac.

A young pimply guerrilla carrying a submachine gun stops us. He tells Mami I can’t take the trike on board. She offers our luggage in exchange, explaining that I’m just a little girl. The guard refuses. Mami nervously whispers to me to let him have it.

“No!” I scream. “This is MY bike! My birthday bike! I'm not leaving it here!”

“Okay, okay, adelante,” the guerrilla mutters. Go ahead.

We leave. Someone at Miami customs steals my trike from our meager belongings. We are in America now. We must be American. But our core will always be Cuban. Consequently, we’re haunted. So many Cubans want to believe any rumors of Castro’s death, no matter how laughable or shaky. And every time the gossip proves premature, the old feelings of loss sting once more.

Case in point, Perez Hilton. Perez, aka “Queen of all Media,” aka Mario Armando Lavandeira Jr., “reported” in August 2007 on his celebrity gossip Web site that Castro is muerto:

“The announcement of Fidel Castro’s death will be made at approximately 4:00 P.M. Eastern, PerezHilton.com has just been updated exclusively … We stand by our story 100% … To everyone in Miami, please be mindful of each other and keep your safety in mind.”

It would be pretty amazing if Cuban-American Perez — he’s a Miami native — scooped The New York Times. A Hollywood-obsessed blogger with zero journalism experience and hair the colors of tropical fruits? It’s perfect. After all, it was The Times that helped put Perez on the map with a lengthy profile back in July.

But let’s face it. Perez may appear on The View and on his own VH1 reality show — two cultural zeniths if ever there were any — but he’s no Munchkin coroner. Remember what he said about the Wicked Witch?

As Coroner, I must aver/I thoroughly examined her.
And she's not only merely dead/she's really most sincerely dead.

Now there’s a stickler for accuracy.

Believing Perez over The Times is like believing in Elvis sightings. And who knows? Castro dead and Elvis alive? Arriba!

Nevertheless, wishful thinking trumps reality: The latest wave of greatly exaggerated rumors of Castro’s death has provoked countless emails from friends, breathlessly blurting, “Have you heard!?! Fidel is dead! DEADDEADDEAD! Are you and your family throwing the biggest Cuba Libre party of your lives? P.S. He is definitely dead, right?”

“Well,” I respond, “definitely. But not sincerely.”

There will be climactic explosions across Miami’s Little Havana, the airwaves, the papers, and the Internet on the day Castro is sincerely dead. For me, just knowing that I’ve outlived him will be enough — almost — to make me happy. “Almost” because I wish Papi were here with Mami and me to enjoy it together. Maybe he is.

But after the big bangs, the cheers, the orgiastic eruptions of pent-up emotion — what then? Will we see a sea change on that island nation? Could it get even worse?

Raúl Castro, Fidel’s youngest brother, has been running the country for more than a year. According to Norma, a family friend and recent émigré, “Este hijo de puta Raúl podría ser peor que Fidel” [This son-of-a-bitch Raúl could be worse than Fidel].

Cubans are optimists and great romantics, so it takes a lot for Norma to say what she said. And it pains me to admit that I, who haven’t set foot in Cuba in 47 years, also don’t see a free, open Cuba once Castro dies. I hope I’m mistaken, but nothing in Raúl’s makeup or history suggests he longs for democratic reforms.

Either way, I’d like my trike back. I mean, that life. I still dream about it: my glamorous parents young and healthy, marble tiles cool beneath my feet, the full sun’s warmth dappling through palms fronds. It’s the dream of home, a lost dream too real to leave behind.by Gigi Anders

I recently saw a photo of Punta Gorda, Trinidad Cuba and it blew me away. I learned to swim at that very spot long, long time ago. It finally downed on me like other cubans, that I will never see my homeland again for I will not ever go back while Fidel Castro still in power. The only thing I wish this man and his cronies who distroyed my country and family is that when his time comes he stays for an eternity in the company of all the evil he has done. 'Jason, cuban-americans, you have to understand are not saying that the government prior to castro's was good. It was extremely corrupt. But only once you can live there can you even compare it to the U.S. Yes, many liberal communist sympathizers dont paint castro to be so bad. But if he isn't so bad, how come so many cubans risk their lives to come to the states in a raft, 90 miles. most die! Also, you are wrong, pre castro it was not just extremely rich and extremely poor. however in this situation most of the ones who were wealthy worked hard for that. Most of the poor didnt. Why should someone like castro be able to penalize the hardworking to help those who weren't hardworking. I know that many poor people worked hard. Like my family and the blacks. But, those are the facts of life it's not fair. But When you try to make everyone equal, it will be even less fair. And don't compare facts of the Cuban government to those of the U.S. if you have a problem with how our country is run, then why don't YOU swim 90 miles with the sharks so you can live in the paradise of communism. Then, one more victim of communism can take your place here and live the American dream. Viva los Estados Unidos. Viva una Cuba libre y democratica. ' [Report Comment]

'Lets see. Cuba has 100% literacy, free health care, education, full employment, no homelessness and FREEDOM. Since Castro took over, the average life span of a cuban went from 59 years to 75 years!!! Fidel Castro has fought for not only the freedom of cubans, but he committed thousands of troops to fight against the Apartheid government of South Africa, he helped the Palestinians, Vietnamese and other poor carribbean countries...Yeah he is real EVIL!!!!! He has offered free medical education to balcks and hispanics in the US with the only condition being they practice medicine in their communities given the shortage of doctors in poor communities. He has offered free cataract surgery to 300,000 people who were not cuban for free. He offered 1,100 doctors and 200 tons of medical supplies to the victims of Hurricane Katrina that the US gov't denied.....What was Cuba like before Fidel? You had those who were VERY rich and the rest were VERY POOR!!! It was the playground of the mafia and american tourists. They made prostitutes of the cuban women and crime was rampant...Fidel cleaned all of that up and took from the rich and gave to the poor.... The US has over 15 million homeless, 47 million uninsured, and 1 third of the population living in poverty.....' [Report Comment]

'Yes, I know. And some people believe that water is not wet and that the Jewish Holocaust did not occur, etc after crazy idea, etc. This is why the leftover left gets along so well with the Iranian maniac. They are all extremely delusional. LOL!!! There are really very few educated people on Earth today that would deny that communism (Marxism, Leninism and its variants) has caused more violence, death and terrorism than any other political theory in the history of man. Communism is only known today for deadly purges, lethal gulags and its forced labor, deportations and exiles, man-made famines, and show trials and the inevitable executions. It is also a historical FACT that as a result of this ridiculously flawed ideology tens of millions of innocent men, women, and children have been murdered in cold blood. It started with the whole royal family of Russia in 1917, and to this day Communists continue to claim innocent lives. Here are some brief numbers, which anyone with a library card or Internet connection can easily verify: ? 65 million in the People's Republic of China ? 20 million in the Soviet Union ? 1 million in Vietnam ? 2 million in North Korea ? 2 million in Cambodia ? 1 million in the Communist states of Eastern Europe ? 150,000 in Latin America ? 1.7 million in Africa ? 1.5 million in Afghanistan ? 10,000 deaths "resulting from actions of the international communist movement and communist parties not in power." After all, these animals of history's slogan is ?Communism or death?.' [Report Comment]

Most Americans cannot and will not every understand what it is like to have to run from your country forever. Most immigrants value their freedom here more than Americans that are born here. Freedom is taken for granted. Start by reading, try Kite Runner to get alittle dose of reality in other countries. We are so lucky to be here folks!!! Cubans do not dilike Cuban Americans, someone commented... because it is their family who live in Miami that support them. If it wasn't for the relatives in the US to send medicine and money most Cubans would not be able to treat illnesses and eat! The reason Cubans in Cuba do not rebel is because they spend all their day looking for food! WAKE UP PEOPLE! Things are really bad there. They can get an education but get paid nothing, you can more as a taxi driver than as a doctor! How do I know all this is because I live with my husband who came when he was 4 and has never been able to get passed it, eventhough he was raised here and is more American than Cuban. 'I hear everyone talking about Castro's death but what about giving the Cuban people everything that was taken from us, other than just freedom. I am talking about my grandpap's lands that was probably sold to an American or an European person. For more details visit myspace.com/freerebelyouth.' [Report Comment]

'If all the Cubans in the US where as well off as they report to be, Cuba would be one big long line of palaces. The extended bellies of children living in bohios was from malnutrion. THey are better off now...without the upper class taking advantage of them and keeping them impoverished.' [Report Comment]

'Hello, Ms. Anders. I'm Venezuelan and just barely made it out of my country, after giving up a prominent career in media because I feared for my life. On the day I left Venezuela, the National Guard took my passport and ransacked through my luggage, asking questions about why I was taking such things as books with me. I told them the truth: I'm moving to the U.S. with a work visa. That's when it happened: they started insulting me, calling me a traitor, accusing me because I was going to work for "El Imperio", calling me a "gusano", poking fun at me as a piblic figure and humiliating me in front of everyone there (other guards and the airline's employees). I kept my cool (barely), re-packed my bags, and picked up my passport to get on my plane. As I walked through Customs at MIA, I saw a replica of the Statue of Liberty and started to cry!!! "I' free!!!" I thought... Barely... I want my career back!!!!! But, then again, I mind not starting over in this free country, doing whatever I can to make some noise about what's happening now in my native Venezuela. I wish with all my might to go back to Venezuela. It's not easy going back to being a nobody in a stranger's land, after you've worked all your life to be a "somebody" in your country. If it weren't for Chavez and his "Revolution" I would have never thought I would end up moving to the U.S. I know it's NOT easy to start over in this friendly country, and I would not have done it if I had had any other option. I just cannot understand how my fellow Venezuelans haven't learned from Cuba's experience. We've even permitted the government to shut down our oldest and largest television network, RCTV, and nothing has really happened since. A few pacific manifestations and marches. That's it! Right now, it's as if everyone forgot what happened only three monts ago... I not only hope Fidel is dead, but his ideology as well, for he has been Chavez's mentor and that makes me hate him even more!!! God Bless!!!' [Report Comment]

'It may take decades for Cuba to be what it once was, but we need to strive to make it happen. Cuba had a huge middle class, and a very high standard of living for most of its people, in spite of the many dictators that we had before this thug Fidel. I remember as a child seeing even people that had dirt floor huts, ( Bohios ) with full bellies, because they had farm animals, and vegetable gardens. And all this talk about the Mafia in Havana. So what ? The Mafia had a few hundred people controling the Havana casinos, but there were 8 million happy Cubans. So what happened then? Two things : Number one : We didn't know how good we had it. And number two : We were lied to by Mr. Castro. Had he admitted that he was a communist, he wouldn't have ever made it to power. Read your history. He never admitted to being a communist until he was firmly in power in 1960. So don't give me any of your pussy-footing liberal rap. Communism and American Liberalism are lies that will be unmasked by history, sooner or later. And Cuba will reject left wing ideas for decades to come, once it shakes itself of this curse.' 'Just a brief note to Miguel M. Cuba is already one of the poorest Countries in Latin America. A Country that destroyed its middle class will have a very difficult task recovering from the Marxist fantasy that so many people still want to believe in despite its awful record of failure.' 'I enjoyed inmensely your book JUBANA. Do you remember Ofelia Fox's message about it? She would read it out loud to me even in the Emergency Room (while she waited for the doctors!) and I have enjoyed this piece. I am glad that it appears that you will be able to celebrate on earth the departure of such a dark soul. One that brought nothing but destruction to our country.' [Report Comment]

'I have often wondered--especially since 9/11, why God allows dictators to dominate for a full natural life. I wonder what happened to assassins. I wonder why evil empires exist and thrive. I don't have to wonder why people from other countries under such regimes flock to America. We are the greatest country ever but I wonder when that will all come to an end. We seem to be dying a natural death because of the pollution of our own democracy. The response from "Miguel" talks about "living in our native countries"---I wonder if I will want to live in my native country if things keep moving more to the left than to the right. I wonder.' 'Would Cuba be better without Castro? Many Cuban convicted felons in the U.S, would be deported, and crime will dramatically rise. There won't be as many amazing athletes since they won't be supported. The hospitals and doctors will be much worse. No longer will education be a major focus and Cuba will be one of the poorest countries in Latin America. Unfortunately democracy is not optimal in most Latin American countries. Finding an honest and capable person to run a Latin American country is basically impossible because of corruption. Hopefully one day in our lifetimes we'll find out and get to enjoy the beauty of living in our native countries. In the meanwhile, we will continue living in the U.S. and proudly doing the best we can here.' [Report Comment]
