William Jennings Bryan was a great American populist whose unwavering belief in the virtues of the common man led him to oppose banks, railroads, imperialist, and Darwinism. His name is most readily connected with the Scopes trial, but he also served as Secretary of State, and lost two closely fought elections for president to William McKinley. Bryan died on July 26, 1925.
