Such issues, I agree, as the voluntary ending of one's life, though legal in itself in all 50 states, can not be effected with assistance in 23 states without sending the assister(s) to prison. In many of the remaining 27 another person(s) can be present, as long as the person does not provide the means and does not assist in the fatal, final act, but in 15 states even greater degrees of assistance are possible. In many of these there is no legal bar to assisting, even providing the means. The Compassionate Chaplaincy Foundation began hands-on work in 1995, years before any other group dared do so. We continue our work today, but only in states where there is no bar to assisting. Interestingly, Oregon, with its many restrictions, is NOT one of these. We consider a spiritual orientation to be important and are not interested in working with people lacking any such orientation. We have worked with most every faith tradition, including those whose hierarchies discourage suicide for the hopelessly ill. The Chaplaincy was the testing arm of the New Tech group that devised and refined use of helium. We are keenly aware that people who suffer the most are those without terminal diagnoses. They are most needy. Those with terminal illnesses know there is an end insight; while those, like "no name," who are hopelessly ill may face decades of helplessness, misery and pain, especially if they live alone. We can aid with a fast death (15 minutes) or a slower, intentional death (15 days by withholding food and water). A website concerning spirituality and assisted suicide is expected to be up and running within the month at www.compassioante-chaplaincy.org.
