Ask Judy

DECEMBER 2, 2008        TAGS: ADVICE, DEATH, DYING, CAREGIVING
Do you, or someone you care about, know someone who is dying?

Obit Magazine brings you award-winning Vanity Fair Contributing Editor Judy Bachrach's "TheCheckOutLine.org - An Advice Column on Dying Well."

Each Wednesday, Judy will answer your questions and offer advice to the dying and those who care about them. She truly understands the need for assistance during this critical stage of life -- the last act -- that, because of medical advances and early diagnoses, many are consciously living out for months and even years. Changes in wills, loneliness, pain, spousal resentment, fear, denial – bring it all on. The only subject that Judy cannot address are questions medical in nature. And, be assured, that "Ask Judy" is completely confidential.

Dear Judy,

My brother was involved in an accident recently in which the other driver was killed.  My brother will heal physically, but I am concerned about his mental health.  I hope my brother will know how to handle his own grief.

Dear Judy,

I have a “friend” who keeps going on and on about  how her sister is a cancer "survivor."  It makes me sick. My sister was misdiagnosed for five years.

Dear Judy,

My mom and dad have smoked for about 40 years.  My mom has been suffering from some form of COPD for the last 10 years.  She gets sick easily, and has had pneumonia requiring hospitalization or ER visits a number of times.

Dear Judy,

I guess you don’t receive many e-mails like this one. My mother has pancreatic cancer and is pretty weak. Her husband (not really my stepfather, I think, since she married him after I had finished college) does nothing for her.
